U.S. House - District 3

This race is a rematch of the contest held two years ago between Republican Calder Clay and Democrat Jim Marshall. In 2002, Marshall squeaked by with a slim victory. This time around Clay has attempted to levy charge after charge against Marshall. Unfortunately for Clay, those tactics have backfired in the very areas of Middle Georgia he would absolutely need to win to capture the seat. Clay said Marshall was AWOL when he missed a vote on tort reform (which passed easily without his vote). Marshall was giving a speech before the Air Force Association by request of the Pentagon. Warner Robins Air Force Base and BRAC 2005 are two issues of utmost importance to the district and the state.

Marshall has had the ear of Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and his top generals, and even anti-Democrat Zell Miller gave him a campaign contribution. Marshall's work to bring more funds to rural hospitals has meant the difference between survival and closure for many. But the accomplishment he is most known for is a discharge petition which forced a vote on striking down an 1861 law that prevented veterans from drawing retirement pay as well as their disability payments. Military.com's John F. Youmans called Marshall's move "bold" and a "monumental breakthrough."

Marshall has been impressive in his first term in Congress and he should be returned. We endorse Jim Marshall.
